Mount Jefferson Wilderness, Oregon.

Years of fire suppression, even in wilderness, has lead to huge fuel buildups.  Coupled with a warming climate this has lead to larger and more frequent wildland fires.   In addition to reducing forest fuels, thick smoke from nearby fires does contribute to amazing sunsets.

Miles of trails we followed on this hike were heavily logged up and nearly brushed over.  Already difficult to follow, within one or two more years these trails will be lost.

Though wilderness does not much care about trails one way or the other they represent a significant investment and, people do care.   Management's continued de facto abandonment of significant portions of our wilderness trail system is truly unfortunate.  This will only change if the public vocalizes their concern to their congressional delegation.

Trails are nearly brushed over and heavily logged up.

Some great crosscut work!
